Applying to a College - By Triniti

Hello All! As you all know, I moved to Michigan last September. This gave me an opportunity to tour my dream school and actually have the potential to attend. I've gone to the campus four times at this point, and each time it's with the thought, These people have my mindset. They look at the world with sense. Everything is seen through the logic and the lens of Scripture and the Constitution. Just. Wow.

This school is Hillsdale College. They love liberty, and since their founding in 1844 they've continued to be fully in support of the people. I could rant about this place for hours (just ask my friends), but instead I'm going to talk about what I've learned during my process of trying to get in. However, I'm sure that in the future will be a post about their history and purpose.

So, of course, there are some things that are common sense for an application to a school. Be sure to get good grades and do more than necessary for graduation. Work at getting a good SAT, ACT, or CLT score, and take it again if necessary. Volunteer (it looks good). Participate in after-school programs like sports and music. This will be important on any application. What I really want to talk about is selecting a school, and making sure it's right for you. And once you do that, do the right things to get in.

I applied to Hillsdale earlier this year, but before I applied, I visited the campus to make sure it was as good as I read that it was. Wherever you apply, I think this is super important. Go on a tour! Meet some of the other students! Learn about the people you'll potentially be around for the next 4 or 5 years. How do they treat other people? What kind of activities are on campus? If you're not confident about those things, it may not be a place you want to go.

Okay, so in light of recent news events... don't cheat on your SAT, no matter which proctors and coaches you know. That's just low, and there's no real reason to do it. If you can't make it in the school you just cheated to get into, what's the point? I have taken this test three times; the fact that some people just cheat cuts me so deeply. No work or effort has gone into that! I also have a friend who wanted into a program that one of these frauds got into. Their "spot", as it were, was possibly taken by this undeserving kid, and that's just not okay.

Anywho. DO EVERYTHING ASKED OF YOU ON TIME AND IN AN ORDERLY FASHION!!! THIS IS SO SO IMPORTANT!!! If you go apply to a school, and don't move forward and actually try to get in, the school is going to think you don't care to get in. They're going to realize that they aren't a priority for you and won't consider you as high on their application list. This is good to remember anyway, for any chance at admission, but having been waitlisted, the one piece of advice I was given was to continue to work at submitting everything possible. Make phone calls, send emails, talk to your admissions counselor! All of this will be beneficial to you.
Now. One thing that you should do is have an interview. While not necessary, it's a good idea to have someone from the school talk to you, because who else would know if you'd be a good fit there? Be prepared to discuss anything. Things you'd think of, like what your major would be, your extracurriculars, things you wish you'd done differently in high school, as well as things you wouldn't think of, like socialism and how Narnia plays into your everyday life. Yes. Part of my interview was discussing Narnia and LotR and it was amazing. We didn't discuss them as stories, but as ways to teach and interesting studies. Be prepared for that.

If you have any other questions, be sure to comment! I'd love to answer.
I'm so glad to be writing again!
That's all for now. I hope to be back really soon.
