Maybe you could tell by the way that was written, but just in case, I'll say more plainly. My family has moved! No longer are we in SoCal. I'm glad to claim to be the first member of the TAJ to move to Michigan. While this is a completely new experience, it's proven to be wonderful. I've only been here for two days at this point, but I'd like to share some things that I've learned and some events of the road trip on the way out here.
We left California last Monday evening. We drove from about 5-ish til around 12:30. We passed through Las Vegas, and Mom pointed out the hotel where she and Dad stayed after they got married. That was very cool to see. I love seeing parts of my family history. About 00:30 (PST), Mom pulled into a rest stop and asked me to stay up for a bit to keep an eye out. I did, and in the meanwhile talked with my friend for a couple hours. Eventually, after 02:00 sometime, I drifted off and when I woke up we were in St. George, Utah.
St. George is one of my favourite cities in the United States. It's simply beautiful, with so much character and charm. We stopped at an antique/vintage store that we love to shop at. If you're ever in Utah in search of vintage books, furniture, board games, clothes, etc. go to Urban Renewal. It's amazing. There's a weird piano in there right now. Avocado green and tagged like nobody's business. Also out of tune. But still super cool.
Then we went and had lunch at my favourite hotel, The Inn on the Cliff. It is a small hotel and restauraunt resting on the side of the mountain.
This place is simply amazing: the view, the service, the food, everything. I made some headway on my book that evening. Comment if you think you know the title. ;)
We left that morning and drove through Utah and part of Colorado, a total of 15hrs that day. As we got off the freeway to stop at this rest stop in Colorado, I saw a sign that read "Historic Schoolhouse -- Turn Right". Knowing we weren't going to see that again, I looked up "historic schoolhouse Wiggins CO". What I found was the story of Enid Marriott, a school teacher in the 1920's-1930. My friends and I spent the whole day reading this six part tale (starting at part two), which was super suspenseful and crazy. I'll include links to the rest of the story at the bottom of this post. And I want to hear your verdict! Everyone comment!
We drove through a portion of Nebraska the next day. Nebraska is a long flat cornfield. Nothing super distinctive. We then passed through Iowa, which looked like Catan (Settlers of Catan, a great board game). It was really pretty, full of rolling fields and hills and such. Also, Glenn Miller was born there. And he's just amazing. Next we went through Illinois and Indiana, both of which were weird. Just. Odd. It was in Illinois though, that I learned what rain is. And in Nebraska I learned of insects. And they both fascinate me.
And then we got to Michigan. And I learned again. The world is beautiful. God made it. Not people. Trees grow, without being planted. So do flowers. Water falls from the sky. Actual water. Enough to get you sopping wet before a minute has passed when you step out into it. Birds and bugs sing. And you can sing with them. The air is clean. You can breathe. There were leaves on the ground! Yellow and red! You can skip and sing and dance and there's space. My friend from Washington has been telling me for years that California is terrible. We've had long debates over whether or not Washington was superiour. And I learned that I was infinitely wrong. California has no rain. No colour. No life. And I know that now.
Here are two pictures of things I saw on my property. The second is perfectly wonderful.
Look at them!!! I walked upstairs from my basement (that's a new thing for me too) and looked out the window, and saw two deer. They saw me too. So I opened the sliding door slowly, stepped outside, turned to close it, and then took a picture. They just stood and watched me. I walked down the porch a bit, not towards them, and they kept watching. It made me laugh. So I started walking towards them, very slowly. The one on the left turned and ran. The other stood for a while longer, but then noticed their friend was gone and left too, not nearly as quickly. At any rate, they were both adorable.
I'll be making efforts to post more regularly, especially now that I'll be living in this new place. Thank you for reading!
love,

P.S. I almost forgot. Here are Parts 3-6 of the Enid Marriott story.
P.P.S. I JUST FOUND PART ONE!!!!!! Okay, explanation. I'd been looking for Part One for a few days now. It's very interesting to read. So. Here you go. Lol
I know the title!
