The Battle of Iwo Jima - by Anna

Hey guys! Welcome back to TAJ. Today, I'm going to do a little history bit for y'all and recommend a really awesome book (and movie, but I haven't seen the movie so I'm not technically recommending that).

Seventy-three years ago today, the invasion of Iwo Jima was launched. Though the invasion cost 26,000 American lives, it was instrumental in securing the end to World War II, and so I think it's a pretty important battle to remember.

First off, here's a little video. They might not be as good as some of the other history videos I've found but this is the best one on Iwo Jima. It's an actual broadcast from 1945. I think it's pretty cool. :)

I read the book I'm about to recommend was one I read on our road trip last summer. (At least I read the kids version... Haven't gotten my hands on the adult version yet, but I'm working on that.)

The book is called Flags of Our Fathers and it was written by the son of one of the six flag bearers from the famous picture on Iwo.

This picture, in case you didn't know which picture I'm talking about. :)
It tells the stories of the six men in the picture and how their lives ended. It's really interesting, and sort of sad at the same time.

There's also a Flags of Our Fathers movie, which is rated R (probably for violence but I'm not 100% sure), and sounds pretty interesting.

So that's a bit of a shorter post, but thought I would share what I found/the book recommendation with you guys. Thanks for reading!

~ Anna
